Galactic Racer’s upgrades took a lap around the tabletop
Fuse Games tested its racing progression with Post-its, scribbles and dice before Shade hit the circuit.
Star Wars: Galactic Racer’s upgrade system began with sticky notes and dice. Fuse Games built a tabletop prototype to test the choices that would eventually send Shade back onto the circuit with a freshly modified speeder.
In an October 8 Eurogamer interview, creative director Kieran Crimmins described the early experiment as “Post-its and a scribble and some dice.” Upgrades and progression could become a playable board game in a day. CEO Matt Webster said putting an idea on paper let the team discuss it faster than building it in software.
Those decisions now sit between races. Hibi’s paddock workshop fits parts earned on a run or bought from her stock, adding stat boosts and abilities. The campaign lets Shade choose events along the way; too many crashes end the tour. Some perks and unlocks survive into the next attempt. A disastrous corner can therefore leave a little more behind than wreckage.
Galactic Racer launched October 6 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its official launch trailer adds Crait’s red salt flats to the circuit and gives Sebulba a beard. The former podracing terror has advice for Shade, who is trying to unseat Galactic League champion Kestar Bool.
